TUERSDAY: MALTA - Gozo & Ġgantija Temples F/D OPTIONAL
Breakfast at the hotel. Explore the magnificent temples of Ġgantija, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site • Visit the Citadel of Rabat, the ancient capital of the island • Stroll along the picturesque bay of Xlendi
Join this day tour and discover the magnificent cultural heritage of Gozo. Visit the main points of interest and uncover hidden gems, savoring the incredible beauty and distinctive charm that this small island has to offer. The tour begins with a short 20-minute ferry crossing to Gozo. Immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere right away. The first stop includes the megalithic temples of Ġgantija, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This impressive archaeological site dates back to around 3600-3200 BC and is believed to be the oldest free-standing monument in the world, predating Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Egypt. The etymology of "Ġgantija" comes from the Maltese word for "giant" ("ggant"), as it was believed that the site was built by a race of giants. This mythological idea makes sense when considering that the temples are built with megaliths (massive limestone blocks) measuring over 5 m in length and weighing over 50 tons. Next, head to the medieval fortified city, locally known as the "Citadella". Located within Gozo's capital (Victoria), with its distinctive skyline and imposing military architecture, this ancient fortified city stands as the main landmark and visible beacon from across the island. The second stop is the delightful sea cove known as Xlendi Bay, located at the end of a deep, lush gorge, once a riverbed and surrounded by picturesque steep cliffs. The bay is now a must-visit for most island hikers. Xlendi's small but vibrant waterfront is bustling throughout the day, with a variety of bars, restaurants, and a handful of souvenir shops. Though seemingly lively during the summer, Xlendi Bay remains a pleasantly tranquil spot even in peak season. The final daily stop on the tour is Dwejra. Located on the western coast of Gozo, this area is a geological and ecological paradise. Its surroundings offer a mix of geology, landscape, fauna, habitats, shores, marine landscapes, archaeology, flora, and history, making this experience unforgettable. Dwejra is also known for its inland sea, a small bay surrounded by high cliffs and connected by an imposing 65 m long natural tunnel opening into open sea. It is a truly fascinating natural formation that evokes wonder. After an intense and experience-rich day, aboard the ferry back to Malta and return to your hotel. What's included: • Hotel pickup and drop-off service (from your hotel or a meeting point very close to your accommodation) • Guided tour guide • Day transport in air-conditioned vehicles • Lunch • A glass of wine • All entrance tickets • Round-trip ferry tickets to Gozo • Any extra drinks consumed during lunch • Optional boat trip to Dwejra Bay (approximately €6 per person) • Tips (optional) in Malta
